Our Fallout 76 oil guide gives you details of where to find black gold, what items it can be scavenged from, and the best spots to farm it. Oil is used in the construction of just about anything mechanical, which includes power armor and mods. At times, you will need a lot of it. Fortunately, there are a few ways you can gather this invaluable crafting commodity.
Fallout 76 Oil Junk Items
There are a lot of junk items that scrap down to give oil. Some, like the oil can, yield a decent amount of the stuff and are fairly readily available. However, if you’re taking on a big mechanical project, you’re going to need quite a lot of these items. Here is a list of the items that you can pick up that will give you oil in Fallout 76:
|Aluminum Oil Can||2|
|Gold Plated Flip Lighter||1|
|Grey & Gould Lighter||2|
|Industrial Oil Canister||2|
|Industrial Size Shortening||4|
|Mr. Handy Fuel||2|
|Plastic Gas Canister||2|
|Portable Fuel Tank||2|
|Unused Flip Lighter||1|
|Used Oil Can||1|
Where To Find Oil In Fallout 76
As you can see from the list, a lot of these items make sense: so, too, do the locations where you find them. Cooking oil is found in kitchens, soap in bathrooms, and oil cans are usually found in garages and workshops.
The Silva Homestead is noteworthy because it contains a range of junk items that will yield nearly 20 oil from a single run (cough, cough, server hop for more, cough, cough).
Tag For Search
Use the Tag For Search feature and tag oil. Whenever you come across an item that contains the resource, it will have a magnifying glass next to its name. This ensures that you shouldn’t miss out on any items that can be broken down for oil. It also means you can avoid picking up bulkier items that are oil-free, saving you inventory space in the process.
There are also deposits to be found in the wild, away from workshops. These can be farmed to gather a handful of oil, or you can build your CAMP here and use an extractor to regularly gather the resource. Although you can find these deposits in most areas of the map, the far East side, The Mire contains a good number. Be warned that it is best to avoid this area until you’re getting on for level 30 because you will face higher level enemies.
You will naturally come across oil during your journey. However, if you really want to ramp up your oil farming, you can claim and retain workshops. All workshops offer resources for claiming them, and continue to produce resources as you build appropriate items on them and hold them. You will need to choose those with oil deposits and build a refinery on the oil deposit. The following workshops are known to contain oil:
- Abandoned Bog Town
- Beckley Mine
- Converted Munitions Factory
- Federal Disposal Field HZ21
- Grafton Steel Yard
- Wade Airport
Beckley Mine and Wade Airport are especially viable options because they have three oil deposits each, yielding up to 75 oil per hour. The other workshops only have a single deposit each.
Finding the resources you need in Appalachia can be tricky. As well as this guide to finding oil, we have published a number of other resource guides as follows:
