In Fallout 76, fiber optics are used primarily for high end CAMP items, but are also used in the crafting of weapons like Ultracite Gatling Lasers. Fortunately, you shouldn’t need a huge amount of the material, because it is one of the more difficult materials to find. This guide will detail the items that can be scrapped and that yield fiber optics in Fallout 76, as well as where to find them.
Fallout 76 Fiber Optics Junk
Fiber optics are considered a rare crafting material. It can’t be mined because there are no deposits of fiber optics. It is not a resource at any workshop, and I’ve yet to find a vendor that sells bulk fiber optics. As such, the only real way to grab the optics you need is to pick up junk items that yield the material when you scrap them.
To make life a little more difficult, there aren’t very many of these fiber optic laden junk items either. Fortunately, one or two can be found in fixed locations and farmed on a regular basis to give you the supplies you need. Here are the items that contain fiber optics:

Where To Find Fiber Optics In Fallout 76
As you can see from the list above, nothing contains fiber optics in volume. You are limited to scrapping around, finding items that actually weight a bit more than you expect them to, and then scrapping them for a single piece of the material. Happily, there are a few places you can head to in order to grab a decent amount at a time.
Head back to Morgantown, and specifically to the High School. You should find a decent amount of microscopes here, and there is a bench where you can scrap them down to save on inventory space too. You’ll usually find four microscopes here, so not the greatest, but it is available early on and is easy to ransack at any level. The existence of the bench in the same room is also handy.
Ella Ames’ Bunker has 6 microscopes in the lab area. They’re all in a single room, but you will have to venture a little further to scrap them down into fiber optics.
The Glassed Cavern is a high level area with high level enemies. If you watch the video below, from SoldierModeLife on YouTube, you can pick up a ton of fiber optics here, but you won’t be attempting this during the early stages.
Tag For Search
The Tag For Search feature allows you to tag any material or resource. Once tagged, items that contain that resource will appear with a magnifying glass next to their name. You won’t find any additional resources, but this should help avoid missing those that you do come across.
