The post-apocalyptic wastelands of Appalachia are a difficult place to survive. Ammunition can be difficult to come by, and many of the aggressors get all up in your grill. Fortunately, there’s a proliferation of handheld weapons you can use. Below is the Gaming Reviews guide to Fallout 76 best melee weapons.
A melee build makes sense in Fallout 76. Ammo can be difficult to come by, especially during the early stages of the game. What’s more, a lot of the creatures you face are more than willing to get up close and personal. Being able to dispatch them in a few seconds, using baseball bats, lead pipes, and more, can level the playing field.
Leveling And Perks
If you do create a melee build, you should concentrate on leveling up Strength, Endurance, and Agility.
Ensure that you have the best armor available, and concentrate on perks that increase melee damage, damage resistance, and attack speed. You need to close the gap between you and the aggressor quickly before dealing as much damage as possible.
When choosing perks, you can improve your use of one-handed and two-handed weapons, as well as your fist based attacks. Decide which you prefer, or spread the perk love around a little, as you see fit.
Stealth combines well with melee. You shouldn’t attract the attention of others after a single shot kill. You should also get the stealth damage bonus.

Finally, grab yourself some of the best melee weapons in Fallout 76 and get playing. Practice will help you time your attacks. It will also enable you to level up, and you can experiment with chems like Psycho to see what really works for you.
The list of weapons below includes some that you can find at the very beginning of the game, some that are unique rewards for completing quests, and some that are really only useful when modded.

Deathclaw Gauntlet – The Deathclaw Gauntlet is one of Fallout 76 best melee weapons if you like “unarmed” attacks. The gauntlet is only available from level 30 but it’s fast and does a lot of damage. What’s more, the gauntlet ignores any armor the target is wearing and can be modded to include an additional claw. If you want one, head to the Sons Of Dane compound. There’s one lying around on the table located in the building at the back right of the compound.
Power Fist – The Power First is a formidable hand-to-hand weapon. It cannot be used while wearing Power Armor, but it can be further improved through the addition of energy damage or piercing damage. A Power Fist can be found on a table at the top of the mutated tree building in Tanagra Town.
One-Handed Melee Weapons
One-handed melee weapons are shorter than most two-handed weapons, so you will have to get a little closer. They are also quicker but do less damage. They rely on speed and the ability to land multiple hits for every one of the aggressor’s single hits.

Black Diamond Ski Sword – The Black Diamond is a modified ski sword and is named after the toughest and most challenging ski slope grade. Plus, it sounds kind of cool. It’s actually quite heavy for a one-handed weapon, but it has been cobbled together from skis. The sword has a +1 Strength special effect and mods that sharpen or enhance the blades and increase damage dealt. The Black Diamond is rewarded for completing the Flavours of Mayhem quest.
Blade Of Bastet – The Blade of Bastet is a unique weapon based on a Chinese Office Sword. It is rewarded for completion of the Forging A Legend quest. A serrated blade mod increases damage by 15% and causes the target to bleed. As a single handed sword, the Blade of Bastet is a quick weapon, although not as quick as daggers.
Camden Whacker – In its basic form, the Camden Whacker is not that great. It will do some damage if you’re a decent strength build, but its real value is experienced when you mod it. Add the bladed mod for an additional 15% damage and a bleeding effect. This weaponised whack-a-mole mallet is acquired by trading in Mr. Fuzzy Tokens at Ash Heap in Camden Park.
Guitar Sword – The Guitar Sword is scavenger crafting at its most musical. It combines a guitar and handle with a junk blade and offers respectable damage levels. It can’t be modded, presumably because it’s already heavily modified, and it can be found on stage at Striker Row.
Meteoritic Sword – The Meteoritic Sword is a unique version of the Chinese Officer Sword. Its damage may not be that great but it has 3 legendary effects that make this a formidable weapon in the right hands. Enjoy 10% extra damage against humans, 90% reduced weight, and 50% extra durability. The sword can’t be modded, and it is occasionally granted as a reward for completing the Breach and Clear event.
The Ancient Blade – The Ancient Blade is another modified Chinese Officer Sword. It has similar damage rating to the Meteoritic Sword, but no legendary effects. What it does have, however, is the capability for some decent modding. Add a serrated blade for 15% extra damage and to cause the target to bleed.
Two-Handed Melee Weapons
Two handed melee weapons are big and they’re powerful, but they’re also cumbersome and slow. You will have to get used to the timing but doing so, and utilizing power attacks, means that you will be able to one hit kill the majority of enemies in the game.

Baseball Bat – The baseball bat is available right from the start of the game and does decent damage. It feels quicker than some of the other slow weapons, and it has minimal weight. It can also be heavily modified. The aluminium baseball bat does more damage, weighs less, and has an even more satisfying sound. Mods also enable you to add barbed wire, nails, razors, chains, or saw blades for additional benefits.
Fire Axe – The fire axe is really quite basic. It only has a weight of 3, despite being slow to swing and a two-handed weapon. It is available near the beginning of the game, is a regular find in buildings and outbuildings, and it can be modded for improved damage and for armor piercing.
Mr Handy Buzz Blade – The Mr Handy Buzz Blade is a modified Ripper. It is a two handed weapon but, unlike most other weapons of this type, it is very fast and deals only a small amount of damage per hit. You can also electrify the head by modding the weapon, making it even more fun.
Sledgehammer – The sledgehammer is another basic weapon. At least in terms of name and features. It doesn’t become available until level 10, and it has an inconvenient weight value of 12. However, the sledgehammer hurts. It’s also a lot of fun. The sledgehammer can be modded to cause bleeding damage or fire damage. Mods can also be used to further increase its damage rating. Get used to timing your swings to do a lot of damage and dispatch of most baddies quickly and easily.
Super Sledge – The Super Sledge is a pneumatically improved version of the Sledgehammer. It can be modified with a heating coil that adds energy damage, according to the level of the weapon. It’s cumbersome, it’s heavy, it’s fun!
