As well as making sure you always have a selection of weapons (ideally including at least one melee weapon) and ammo on hand, you should also ensure that you’re well protected when wandering the wasteland. Power Armor will become available later in the game, but this needs Power Cores and is, quite frankly, bulky, cumbersome, and a bit annoying. Here we look at some of the armor pieces we think are among Fallout 76 best armor sets.
Early Armor
In the early stages of Fallout 76, the best armor you can wear will be determined by the plans you’ve collected and the perks you’ve unlocked.
Initially, you will only be able to craft and wear leather armor before progressing to wood armor and a series of other materials. In these early stages, you should hunt for new blueprints. You should also invest some time and resources in the improvement of your existing armor sets.
As you do progress through the game, you will unlock better and better types of armor until you reach level 45. At this stage you will be able to go out and find the Urban Scout Armor, Forest Scout Armor and Marine Armor sets: Fallout 76’s best armor, excluding Power Armor. As has become common in the Fallout series, once you progress past about level 15, you will gain access to Power Armor, which is arguably the best armor in Fallout 76.
Fallout 76 Outfits
OK, so, outfits aren’t strictly armor. They are worn over the top of armor and the vast majority only serve a cosmetic purpose. Some, albeit only a select few, offer more than a cosmetic improvement. The Hazmat suit, for example, can be worn to reduce radiation damage. The gas mask and tattered dress also offer additional benefits when worn.
The Best Armor In Fallout 76
Once you reach level 45 you can access Fallout 76’s best armor sets, which are the Urban Scout, Forest Scout, and Marine Armor sets.
Urban/Forest Scout Armor
The Urban Scout Armor and Forest Scout Armor sets are the same Enclave base armor, but with different skins. They both have the same stats and offer the same protection. Both sets can be modified to improve their statistics. The pieces can be bought from MODUS at the bunker. Or, they can be found during Enclave events. In Fallout 76, the Scout Armor cannot be crafted, it has to be bought.
There are two level sets, for level 40 and level 50. It can be tricky collecting the pieces you want. Some people hop servers, saving and restarting the game, because the number of pieces available for sale at the bunker is limited. Alternatively, you will have to keep playing for weeks to gather the set naturally. This difficulty in collecting the whole set means it is best to collect the level 50 armor rather than buying level 40.
Assuming that you opt for the level 50 set, the starting stats are as follows:
Chest (Weight 7, Value 60c)
Ballistic Protection – 60
Energy Protection – 40
Legs (Weight 2.5, Value 70c)
Ballistic Protection – 25
Energy Protection – 20
Arms (Weight 2.75, Value 45)
Ballistic Protection – 25
Energy Protection 20
Total Weight – 27.5
Scout Armor Mods
You can mod Urban and Forest Scout Armor. The mods are available from the same vendors in MODUS where you grad the aror. With mods, you can reduce armor weight, reduce detection from movement, increase base protection stats, and much more. The following YouTube video gives you a better idea of some of the Scout Armor mods that are available.
Marine Combat Armor Fallout 76
The Marine Armor set is actually slightly heavier and has worse stats than the Scout Armor. But, it can be crafted and the blueprints are more readily available than these legendary sets. To buy the set head to the Harper’s Ferry vendor. Alternatively, if you’re up for a bit (lot) of server hopping, you can find Fallout 76 Marine Armor plans just round the corner from the vendor:
It is this combination of accessibility, radiation protection and decent protection that makes it one of Fallout 76 best armor sets, even though there are other pieces of armor that offer better protection.
This combat armor was designed for the United States Marine Corps. It combines hard and soft armor elements to give the best all-round results. The base stats for the level 45 variant (you can also get level 35) are as follows:
Chest (Weight 8, Value 125c)
Ballistic Protection – 46
Energy Protection – 19
Radiation Protection – 19
Legs (Weight 4, Value 120c)
Ballistic Protection – 19
Energy Protection – 14
Radiation Protection – 0
Ballistic Protection – 19
Energy Protection – 14
Radiation Protection – 0
What do you think is the best armor in Fallout 76? Do you run (walk slowly) around all game in Power Armor?
